The Role of Choirs in Shaping the Faith of Young Catholics
Abstract
Experiences lived within liturgical setting often shape a person’s faith more profoundly than formal instruction, especially when these experiences are embodied, communal, and rooted in the Church’s theological understanding of worship. Within this framework, liturgical music becomes a privileged space where young Catholics encounter God through embodied prayer, harmony, and sustained participation in the life of the Church. This study aims to explore how long-term involvement in choir ministry shapes the faith, identity, and liturgical belonging of young Catholics within the Minahasa cultural context. To achieve this purpose, the research employs Max Van Manen’s practical phenomenology to examine the lived experiences of nine young Catholics who have served eight to ten years in the choir ministry of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Sea - North Sulawesi. Data were collected through narrative descriptions submitted via Google Form and structured interviews, allowing participants to articulate their embodied, spatial, temporal, and relational experiences in depth. The findings indicate that choir ministry functions as a formative environment where bodily engagement, sacred liturgical space, long-term rhythms of service, and communal relationships nurture spiritual sensitivity, emotional maturity, and personal responsibility. Cultural elements of Minahasa particularly musical spontaneity, strong kinship values, and the communal ethos of Mapalus further enrich liturgical participation and deepen the youth’s sense of belonging. Viewed through a phenomenological and inculturated lens, choir ministry emerges as an effective pastoral setting for holistic faith formation among young Catholics.
